The Mentalist is a crime drama on the CBS network which stars Simon Baker as Patrick Jane, an independent consultant who has a remarkable ability to solve complex cases using his razor sharp powers of observation. The show was created by Bruno Heller and has been running since September 2008. It's now in its sixth season with episodes available to watch at no cost on the website of The Mentalist. Set in California, the show follows Jane along with fellow consultant Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney) as they help law enforcement officials crack difficult cases by employing their skills that are unorthodox and non-traditional for law enforcement. The show's original incarnation was as the procedural comedy-drama The Mentalist which was broadcast on TV network TNT from September 2008 to December 2009, for a total of 60 episodes. When The Mentalist got cancelled by TNT after two seasons, producer Bruno Heller quickly pitched it to CBS where it was picked up for the fall season. What followed then were cosmetic changes that would transform the show into one that was more dramatic than comical. The basic premise was not changed much in the transition from The Mentalist to The Mentalist. All of them play important roles in the contemporary American Dream and they represent different aspects of it. Some aspects include: the pursuit of justice, its defense against crime and corruption, human relationships, careers and so forth. Season 1 (2009–2010) The Mentalist follows Patrick Jane, a former consultant for the CBI who has given up his badge and gun to pursue a new line of work as an independent consultant. As an independent consultant, Patrick is not bound by any special laws or agreements that govern a licensed detective. The term "independent consultant" sounds very grand but in reality, it means that Patrick is a guy who specializes in the use of his skills and knowledge in solving crimes. In season 1, Patrick Jane opens up a private investigation firm, known as P.I. Jane, while also working for the CBI to help them solve cases that they can't crack on their own.
